About the program

Sustainability Victoria’s $1.76 million Better Commercial Buildings program delivers grants of up to $30,000 for commercial building owners and managers to retrofit their building to reduce their energy consumption. Buildings must be situated in Melbourne and more than 1000 m2 to be eligible. A panel of approved service providers is available to participants in the program.

New funding to make your building more energy efficient

Did you know that improved building performance can lead to savings in energy costs, increased tenant satisfaction, and lower vacancy rates? The Better Commercial Buildings program will provide $1.76 million in grants to support building owners, managers, and tenants make their buildings more energy efficient, reduce emissions, and improve their NABERS rating by 1 star, on average. Applications are now open.

Funding to upgrade 50 underperforming commercial buildings

Sustainability Victoria’s Better Commercial Buildings program will support owners of Victoria’s commercial buildings and tenancies (including offices, hotels, retail, and data centres) to identify and implement energy efficiency upgrades that lead to an improvement in building performance.

Recipients of the last building upgrade program reported:

  • Reduction in energy billing costs
  • Decreased maintenance costs
  • Reduction in tenant complaints
  • Increased asset value and appeal to prospective tenants, and
  • Decreased response time in relation to detecting and locating problems

The program will also provide access to a facilitation service for participants wishing to access third party finance for upgrades.

Important changes to the Commercial Building Disclosure Program

A view of Sydney's skyline from the Royal Botanical Garden. 30.07.12Following a comprehensive review of the Commercial Building Disclosure (CBD) Program earlier this year, and public consultation on the proposed changes to the program, the Australian Government announced this week that the mandatory disclosure threshold on commercial office buildings will reduce from 2000 square metres to 1000 square metres starting 1st July 2017.

Importantly, this impending expansion of the regulatory requirements of the CBD program to include additional commercial office buildings, also comes with the announcement of reducing the regulatory requirements for the Tenancy Lighting Assessment (TLA) component by increasing the TLA validity period from 1 to 5 years from 1st September 2016.
